After reading Big Bug, 3rd-5th graders used changes 
in size, proportion, and space to create different views of one scene.

3rd graders had the option to create realistic or imaginary bridges with marker and watercolor.  


















April 2018
3rd graders read Tar Beach by Faith Ringgold, then created their own 
"If I could fly" art and statements in the style of the artist.

2nd graders created self-portraits for their Rainforest characters.

2nd graders were inspired by the artist Robert Davis and used 
their knowledge of three-dimensional shape and analogous color schemes in these vibrant works.

2nd graders created colorful Panther Chameleons while they were studying rainforests.

3rd graders looked at the art of Piet Mondrian, his use of horizontal and vertical lines, and limited color squares and rectangles.  They then created more colorful versions using simple lines and shapes.







February 2018

3rd graders looked at East Asian landscape paintings and architecture.  They created their own dynamic landscapes with architectural elements in black, gray, and white.












January 2018
2nd and 3rd graders looked at the work of Joe Feddersen, who explores Plateau Native American art.  They then created their own art with paint washes and stencils.

2nd and 3rd graders created standing paper
 sculptures, interesting from any view.

2nd-5th graders looked at Paul Klee's Cat and Bird 
and created their own colorful cats with oil pastel and watercolor.

2nd-5th graders learned about the tradition of Day of the Dead / Dia de los Muertos.  
Some students honored loved ones from their own lives.

After looking at examples of radial symmetry from nature and several cultures, 
second and third graders explored radial symmetry by transferring one design four times.

3rd grade students have been creatively
 constructing many kinds of architecture with
 cardboard, tape, glue and paint.

2nd grade artists looked at landscape photos of "floating mountains" in 
China as well as traditional Chinese architecture and ink paintings.  
Using simple lines and washes in tempera and 
markers, students created their own landscape paintings.








April 2016


Students in 3rd grade read the book Big Bug by Henry Cole.  After viewing the illustrations that change perspectives, students created their own visual storyboards of changing views.

color and pattern with poster board and markers.

1st and 2nd graders were covering two and three-dimensional shapes in math class, 
so it was the perfect time to create form with pastel and colored paper in art class.






















February/March 2016

2nd and 3rd graders were inspired by the art of Paul Cezanne and Henri Matisse to create still life paintings of apples and other objects. Students did a great job of using highlights and shadows to create a three-dimensional effect.
















January 2016

1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders created these wall hangings with the techniques of slab rolling, coils, stamped textures, and glaze.

2nd and 3rd graders created winter landscapes with near, far, and farther away trees.

Australia, Argentina, Somalia, Spain, France, India, and Korea.

1st and 2nd graders were inspired by The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. 
They focused in on the idea of how the main character made a dot with dots and a dot without dots.

Ms. Martin's third grade class explored creating line composition 
by manipulating string instead of drawing as the first step.

Students had good conversations about Impressionist paintings at their table groups.  
After making observations about the kinds of colors and 
brushstrokes they saw, they began their own landscapes and seascapes.

 dots like the Impressionist painters.
